New Year, New Health Goals

There’s no better time than the start of a new year to set new goals for a healthier lifestyle. The great part about New Year’s resolutions is that they’re meant for individuals of any age and chapter of life! If you’re an older adult and want some health inspiration, read below for beneficial, senior-friendly health goals.

Improve Your Diet

Making good food choices is important at any age, but elderly individuals are often faced with age-related challenges that can hinder proper nutrition. These challenges can include side effects from medication, decreased sensitivity, physical difficulty and more. Because of this, it’s important to remember the three main categories to incorporate into your meals every day:

  1. Protein (e.g., eggs, chicken, salmon)
  2. Carbs (e.g., brown rice, oats)
  3. Fruits and vegetables (e.g., spinach, carrots, broccoli)

Incorporate More Physical Activity

Moving your body is just as important in older individuals as it is in the younger generation. Physical activity is crucial for remaining independent as you age. Make it a goal to get 2-3 hours of exercise each week, and those exercises can range from a walk around the neighborhood to a group workout class at your local gym.

Make Your Home Safer

According to the CDC, one out of four older adults fall each year, making falls a very big health concern in the aging population. One of the best ways to prevent these dangerous falls is to add home safety products in high-risk fall spots, such as the bathroom. Some examples include adding grab bars, a toilet framebed rails and other safety products

Stay Away from Alcohol and Smoking

Older adults process alcohol differently, making drinking especially dangerous for seniors. Not only is too much alcohol an overall health risk, but it also can increase the likelihood of accidents. The benefits of quitting smoking, on the other hand, are obvious, and it’s never too late to break the habit. If you wait to quit until your 60s, you still have a 23% lower risk of death than those who don’t quit!

Find a Mobility Aid

Sometimes all you need to stay more active is a little assistance. With mobility aids like walkerscanes/crutchesscooterswheelchairs and more, you can get out and about with greater peace of mind and safety.

Get a Furry Friend

Owning a pet has numerous benefits for seniors. They can give you a better routine, bring a form of companionship, provide more exercise and are a stress reliever all in one. This companionship is especially beneficial with the pandemic putting a hold on many social events!

Aging well takes some time and effort, but even the smallest changes in your daily routine can make a huge difference in your overall health. If you need some new mobility aids or want to add bathroom safety products to your home to prevent falls, you’re in good hands. Check out our online catalog or contact us with any questions!
