Maintain Your Ride: Wheelchair Care Tips

When it comes to your wheelchair, taking care of it properly is important if you want it to last longer and give you a smoother ride. Just like caring for yourself, there are things you should do each day and other things that don’t need to be checked as often. In this blog, we’ll break down important tips for you to do each day, week, month and quarter.

Daily Care Tips

Make it a part of your nighttime routine to run through each of these steps before bed each night:

  • Store your wheelchair in a dry place
  • Clean off any dirt with a damp cloth
  • Dry your chair off at the end of each day
  • Double check the air in your tires and add air if necessary

Weekly Care Tips

Pick your least-busy day and set time aside to check your wheelchair for these following things:

  • Check all four of the wheel axles and clean out any dirt or hair
  • Tighten any spokes that are loose and replace broken ones
  • Make sure the tires are puncture-free and the tread isn’t worn. If necessary, have your tires replaced.
  • Check that the rear wheels can spin freely without wobbling or making unusual noises. If you notice these issues, the ball bearings may need to be repaired.
  • Do the same with the front tires and make sure they spin properly. If not, there may be an issue with the bearings.
  • Use a wrench to tighten any loose parts of the wheels.

Monthly Care Tips

One way to ensure that you’re checking these things enough is to go through this list the same day of each month. For example, on the 1st of every month, revisit this blog and complete the following steps:

  • To make your wheelchair easier to open and close, wax the frame.
  • Tighten any loose screws and bolts, then make sure your wheels and steering are good to go.
  • Look for cracks or dents in the frame.
  • File down any sharp or rough edges on the arm rests, leg rests or hand rims.
  • Make sure the chair’s ball bearings are factory sealed to prevent rust.

Quarterly Care Tips

Every quarter, or about 4 times a year, follow these important steps:

  • Replace ripped seat fabric to prevent pressure sores.
  • If you have a foam seat, make sure it’s still firm and has bounce.
  • Oil any pivot-points on the chair.

It’s just as important to find a quality wheelchair as it is to take care of it. If you’re looking to upgrade the wheelchair you currently have, look no further! Click here to check out the chairs we offer and contact us with any further questions.
