What to do with Your Mobility Equipment in the Winter

As the winter months are here, it is essential that you make plans for your mobility equipment. Whether you use a manual wheelchair, a power wheelchair, or a scooter it is so important to take precautions during the winter to ensure the longevity of your device and help you safely use your device in the winter weather!

Get an Inspection

  • When planning for the winter months, it is a great time to get an inspection of your equipment done. Doing so will ensure that everything is working properly before winter to avoid any problems throughout the winter season.

Remove Ice

  • A good trick to know before winter is to use table salt to get the ice off your device and ramps. If you use other salt materials it can cause metals to rust and rock salt isn’t safe for animals. Table salt works just as well and will help in maintaining your device!

Prepare Equipment Ahead of Time

  • Making a few adjustments and changes to your device will allow it to work better in snow and ice conditions. You could consider installing snow tires for more traction. You could also install wheel blades to assist you in getting through snow and ice better!

Storage Tips

  • Make sure that batteries are fully charged before storing
  • Store in a climate above 32°F (0°C)
  • Disconnect batteries from the device before storing to prevent and slow down the discharge
  • Ideally, store your equipment in a garage or shed
  • Afterward, if your equipment has been in storage for a long period, give it time to get back to room temperature before usage

Your mobility equipment helps you with your everyday life and maintaining it in the winter is crucial for a long-lasting device!
