Does a Stair Lift Work on Any Stairs?

Are you or a family member trying to decide if a stairlift is the right choice for your or their needs? You may be wondering if your stairs are suitable for a stairlift. Most stairs can accommodate one of the types of stairlifts. The more complex the staircase, the more expensive it will be to install a stairlift.

Straight Staircase

If your stairs are straight, a straight stairlift will work perfectly and will be the cheapest option. First, measurements of the stairs’ length and width will be taken to make sure that the stairs have the proper measurements. There is usually a specific width that the stairs must be for each stairlift and that applies to all types of stairlifts. The tracks for the stairlifts are usually in pieces and joining them together on a straight staircase is the simplest. Here at Eco Medical, we offer a couple of great straight stairlift options. We carry Bruno’s most popular stairlift, the Elan Stairlift. We also carry the Pinnacle SL600 H.D. Straight Stair Lift by Harmar.

90-Degree or 180-Degree Turn Stairs with a Landing

If there happens to be a 90-degree turn or a 180-degree turn with a landing on your stairs, it may be suggested that you need two straight stairlifts. These will be more expensive because there are two separate stairlifts rather than one long one. The two stairlifts will require the user to get up from one chair and move to the other.

Curved Staircase

The other option is a curved stairlift. This will eliminate the user from having to get in and out of one chair and move to the other. Curved stairlifts are usually custom and that will result in them being more expensive than straight stairlifts. They will require more advanced measurements to make sure they fit your specific staircase. At Eco Medical, we offer Bruno’s Elite Curved Stairlift, Harmar Pinnacle CSL500 Helix, and Harmars Helix Curved Stair Lift

What If Your Staircase Is Too Narrow?

If your staircase is too narrow, this can be a safety hazard and you may be unable to have a stairlift. Too narrow of a staircase could be a tripping hazard, and users could hit their knees on other parts of the staircase. It is important that there is a proper consultation done to make sure the stairlift is safe.

What About the Landing Space?

The last important factor to consider is the landing space at the top and bottom of the staircase. This is where the stairlift seat will rest when it’s not in use. If there is not enough space, it may cause an issue. Luckily, there are many solutions that can be done to make sure the stairlift works and is safe.
