Safety Tips for Wheelchair Ramps

Wheelchair ramps are a very helpful and useful tool, but when not used correctly they can become dangerous. It is crucial to take precautions and use wheelchair ramps correctly and safely. We are going to share with you 5 safety tips for wheelchair ramps so that you and the people around you stay safe!

1. Pay Attention to the Degree of Incline

  • One of the first steps to using your wheelchair ramp safely, and one of the most important steps, is to check the ramp’s degree of incline. When a ramp’s incline is too steep it increases the risk of injuries and falls. Steep ramps can be extremely difficult to climb, and the possibility of tipping backwards increases. The lower the incline, the safer the ramp will be to use.

2. Make Sure the Landing is Safe

  • Another important factor to consider when using a wheelchair ramp is the landing at both the top and the bottom of the ramp. It is extremely helpful if the landing is completely flat and level to ensure maximum safety. A flat and level landing will prevent tipping onto the side of the ramp.

3. Handrails vs No Handrails

  • Handrails are helpful and can make using the wheelchair ramp easier and safer. For public ramps, handrails are required because some people can’t use the ramp without them. For personal and portable ramps, handrails aren’t required and may not always be available. It generally depends on the user whether or not the handrails are needed but keep in mind that handrails are helpful in ensuring extra safety while using a wheelchair ramp!

4. Practice is Key

  • It is important to remember, especially if you are new to using a wheelchair ramp, that it will take time to get used to and will most likely take some practice before you have perfected using the wheelchair ramp safely and effectively. Practicing on different inclines of ramps could be helpful too!

5. Check the Weather

  • When the weather is bad, wheelchair ramps can get dangerous. Snow, ice, and rain can all make the ramp slippery and difficult to use. Having a non-slip surface on the ramp will help make sure that the ramp can be safely used even during bad weather.

Using a wheelchair ramp can be extremely helpful when going to and from many different places throughout your day. Ensuring that you use the wheelchair ramp safely will help you maximize the benefits from the wheelchair ramp and will decrease the risk of injuries that could happen on.
